There is a dialog for configuring shortcuts, toolbar buttons, scripts, and so on.
We reach it via 1. menu → tools → custom (the 2nd entry from the bottom)
or via. 2. context menu within the toolbar → the entry at the bottom.
These entries both have an icon that shows a yellow triangle with a red and grey scissor above which is - as I think - not very descriptive.
At least in the German translation these entries as well as the title of the dialog mentioned above are called ‘Benutzerdefiniert’ which means something like 'user defined which is totally meaningless in these places.
I’d propose a name like ‘configure tools’, ‘tools setup’ or something like that. Also as icon I’d propose the typical ‘screwdriver and wrench’ or a ‘gear’.
Customize is an accurate English descriptor used in other software for such a dialog. Regarding the icon, there is probably room for improvement, your suggestion for a suitable replacement seems acceptable.
‘Customize’ seems to be a good English term so it seems to be a problem of the translation.
Unfortunately in Crowdin there are multiple entries found under the terms of ‘customize’ as well as ‘Benutzerdefiniert’.
I’ve added a request to clarify the usage. Some of the translations seem to be 11-12 years old but still are not good.
It doesn’t help when it’s the butchered version of the word Customise so I would say the true German translation would be Anpassung which I believe is applied to car mods (correct me if I’m wrong) as Autoanpassung so the Paper and Scissors icon is demonstrating cutting the page to what we as users want but I’ve no problem with screwdriver and wrench but we already have gear for settings so I’d not be too in favour of that.
I can’t help with Bri’ish or 'murican terms but I can confirm that the German translation is sub-optimal, at least.
Customize is used for the tool bar button and also for the dialog window header, but this is no problem in this case.
I like the idea to translate a verb with a verb and prefer Anpassen, too (Benutzerdefinieren doesn’t work…). I removed the approval for this one now. Let’ see if there are any reactions when you suggestion appears in the GUI.
