Introduction: Mechanical Engineering Student Interested in FreeCAD and GSoC

Hello everyone,

My name is Krunal, and I am a mechanical engineering student from India with a strong interest in CAD design, open-source development, and engineering software.

I want to contribute to FreeCAD because I believe open-source CAD tools are very important for students and engineers who need powerful software without high cost. My academic background is in mechanical engineering, so I am especially interested in areas related to mechanical design, part modeling, assembly workflows, and technical drawing.

At present, I am learning FreeCAD step by step and improving my understanding of how the software works internally. I would like to participate in GSoC and contribute meaningfully to FreeCAD projects, especially in areas where mechanical engineering knowledge can be useful.

I am currently looking for guidance on:

  • Which beginner issues I should start with
  • Which module is most suitable for a mechanical engineering student
  • How to prepare properly for contributing to FreeCAD under GSoC

I am excited to learn from the community and contribute gradually.

Thank you!

I’m very glad you’re interested in FreeCAD. Frankly, what you want to work with depends on what you enjoy. Open the program, use it, and think about what you would do to change anything you don’t like, or look at the code and see if it inspires you to develop it further.

Seeing your interests I wonder if looking at the issues around easy generation of sectioned
views in assembly drawings, see https://forum.freecad.org/viewtopic.php?t=100958, might
be a thought. But don’t just take my interest, it would need to enthuse yourself and
be seen as a benefit by the community.
