[GSOC 2026] Waiting for proposals

We just applied us an org for GSOC2026!

I’ll post here when we hear if we’re accepted or not, by 19 february

The main page is at https://wiki.freecad.org/Google_Summer_of_Code

If you have a good idea that could become a good gsoc project, or any question about the program, or wish to be a mentor, this is a good place!

And, we’re officially in this year! https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/programs/2026/organizations/freecad

If you are interested in participating as a student, check all the documentation and requirements, and talk to us! Either here (in this thread, or open a new thread with your idea) or directly on one of the github issues.

If you are interested in being a mentor, talk to me, chennes or kkremitzki.

I found last year very beneficial, and this year I would like to be involved in mentoring and administrative aspects.

Hi! I’m a prospective GSoC 2026 student interested in contributing to FreeCAD.

I’ve already built FreeCAD locally on Windows using pixi and started exploring the codebase. I’m currently working on a UI issue related to the status bar unit selector (#25128) to understand the architecture.

My background is in C++ and Unreal Engine VR development, and I’m especially interested in geometry, measurement tools, or visualization features.

Could you suggest areas where contributors are most needed, or ideas that could make a strong GSoC proposal?

Thanks!

It’s more important what you want to do than what we need. Work on what you enjoy doing, what will improve FreeCAD for you. In GSOC elections, proposals are certainly very important, but what truly strengthens a proposal is the proposer’s familiarity with FreeCAD.

Thanks for the advice!

I’ll continue working on small issues first to get familiar with the codebase.
I’m currently exploring the Measure and GUI modules and will propose an idea after contributing a bit more.

Appreciate the guidance!

Hi! I am aspiring GSOC 2026 student. I have been exploring the BIM workbench, and I am particularly interested in the project ideas related to IFC metadata and architectural documentation.
:black_small_square:To get started, I have already:
1)create my forum and wiki accounts
2)set up my GitHub profile
3)Downloaded the source code and I am currently following the compilation guide for windows to build Free CAD locally.
:black_small_square:Programming Skills:
I have working knowledge in both python and C++. I am also familiar with Git for version control.
I am also interested in 3D designs
I plan to look for a good first issue in the BIM workbench to better understand the code structure. Could you suggest a specific area in the BIM tools where a new contributor could help with a small bug fix or documentation update?
thanks!

Hi VAISHNAVI REDDY ,

you can take a look at GitHub issues marked with ‘Good first issue’ and ‘BIM’ labels to see if you would like to tackle one of these issues.

The list of BIM first good issues: https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/issues?q=is%3Aissue%20state%3Aopen%20label%3A"Good%20first%20issue"%20label%3A"Mod%3A%20BIM"

Tom

Thank you for providing the link! @semhustej
I am currently looking through the ‘good first issues’ for the BIM workbench. I will pick one that aligns with my python skills and start working on it.
I really appreciate the guidance.

VAISHNAVI REDDY great! It’s good to have new developers contributing to the project.

Hi everyone,

My name is Vikram, and I have recently completed my Master’s in Aerospace Computational Engineering from Cranfield University. My background is in computational mechanics, numerical methods, and FEA, and I am particularly interested in solver development and multiphysics workflows.

I am very interested in Project 2: Combining FreeCAD Assembly, Multibody Dynamics, and Finite Element Analysis, as it aligns closely with my academic background and long-term goal of working on integrated simulation frameworks.

I would appreciate some guidance on:

How to get started with the relevant modules in FreeCAD (Assembly, MBD, FEM)

Which parts of the codebase I should study first

Any recommended “good first issues” related to this workflow

Suggested reading or documentation to better understand the current architecture

I am currently setting up the development environment and would like to begin by contributing small improvements or fixes to become familiar with the codebase before drafting a detailed proposal.

Looking forward to your guidance and feedback.

Best regards,
Vikram

Hi Vikram,

it seems to me chennes suggested to create this GSoC project so hopefully he will be able to give you some tips.

Hey, I am Nishi and I work on Industrial Robots and I am looking for a career change towards more Software oriented profiles. I think gsoc would be a good way to show something when applying to new profiles, given that I get to code very less in my main work.
I want to work on making the large file handling more responsive in FreeCAD (https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/issues/17185)
Can anyone suggest me where can I get started to come up with a project proposal for this topic ?

Hi nishi,

what do You think about:

Hello, I am a mechanical engineering student interested in GSoC. I want to work on 3D PDF Export in FreeCAD. How can I start contributing?

Hi Krunal Kurhade
Last year chiragsingh1711 already did a google summer of code on exporting from techdraw to pdf3d.
There may be other things to do related to this project.
However, it’s best to ask for information on the relevant GitHub pages or the forum.

This is the forum thread:
https://devtalk.freecad.org/t/gsoc-2025-proposal-for-implementing-3d-pdf-export-in-freecad-12843/7027/1
https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/pull/23335

https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/issues/12843

This is the list of projects proposed as a Google Summer of Code:
https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/issues?q=is%3Aissue%20state%3Aopen%20label%3AGSoC&page=1

If you’re interested in the PDF format, here’s a project proposal:
https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/issues/13918

You can also suggest your own if you don’t find anything that interests you.

NewJoker I see you being active in the FEM part of the forum, maybe you could give vikram some tips. See his post above. Thank you.

Hello everyone, I’m Devanshi Bhatt, a CSE undergraduate student.
I’m writing to express my strong interest in contributing to FreeCAD as part of Google Summer of Code 2026.
To get started and familiarize myself with the codebase and contribution process, I worked on a “Good First Issue” (#25004) and successfully submitted a fix.
Fix (PR submitted) : https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/pull/28057
I’m committed to contributing consistently, even beyond GSoC, and I’m eager to continue learning and collaborating with the community.
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your guidance and feedback.
Best regards,
Devanshi Bhatt

A potential project is integrating the QtTesting framework with FreeCAD. The QtTesting framework was developed for use in ParaView which has similar UI testing needs.

I have a proof of concept with more information available here: https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/pull/27488

There is a lot of work required to complete this integration. I have a generic framework that can be used as the basis for integration, and a FreeCAD Enhancement Proposal is in the works.

Work is predominantly in C++. Knowledge of Python is desirable for integration, but work in Python is minimal. Some experience developing user interfaces using Qt would help.

Vikram,

I have a number of topics as part of the Rocket Workbench that you might find interesting. It’s an addon, not part of the core code so I’m not sure how that would relate to GSoC, but it would tie in with your academic background.

Specifically:

  1. I’ve developed a crude integration to set up CfD studies of rockets. It is in need of significant refinements to produce reliable studies.
  2. A common problem is fin flutter analysis. There is a simple flutter analyzer as part of the workbench, but a more refined approach using FEM and/or CfD is desireable.

Unfortunately my math background is quite dated so having some fresh eyes on these projects would be most helpful.
