Hi FreeCAD community,
I’m Ayushi Shukla, a B.Tech Mechanical Engineering student
applying for GSoC 2026 with FreeCAD.
My proposed project is an Automated GD&T Annotation Tool
for the TechDraw Workbench — a feature detector that analyzes
Part geometry and suggests ASME Y14.5-compliant GD&T symbols
via a PySide2 task panel.
Pre-GSoC contributions:
- PR #28457 (merged) — Fix undefined variable in moveViews.py
- PR #29118 (merged) — Remove duplicate moveViews.py
I’ll be sharing my progress here regularly. Feedback and
suggestions are very welcome!

Hello Ayushi,
Although Gd&T and ISO GPS is started on the drawing level, real benefit comes when it is applied on the 3D model. Tolerances and datum can be applied to the real feature, surface, hole, etc and not to projected edges.
CAM, 3D printing, variation studies and inspection can benefit from the characteristics assigned to the features on 3d models. It’s also the main objective from the latest standards. In my point of view it is a waist of time to start on drawing level only.
It has to come to the drawing level. In my opinion as a view from the 3D model.
Doing in 3D model in Model as Model Based Definition is the way to go. I would encourage to investigate it.
