Now we need to wait to see if BRLCAD is accepted, and then start putting ideas up. Sean says this year he wants to strictly apply the “2 mentors for each student” policy, so we will need a good team of people interested in mentoring.

I am interested in doing it again.

@yorik, When do we need to start to set up something? The orgs had to apply already! This is what Sean did, AFAIK.

We don’t need to do anything right now. Sean has applied as an umbrella org, like other years. If he’s in, then he’ll ask who is interested in going (he knows we are already )

BRLCAD has been accepted in to GSOC2018. This means FreeCAD will participate as well!

And BRLCAD people are calling for ideas. If anyone has ideas that would be a good subject for the GSOC, please wite on https://www.freecadweb.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code

Also, we will need twice as many mentors as students we can get. So anyone interested in mentoring, please tell me (So far I only know of Bernd). Mentoring is not hard, but it requires a reasonable knowledge of the FreeCAD source code (no need to know it all ,but enough to help a student to find his/her way), and some time (couple of hours/week, during June/July/August).

According to ickby a challenging task would be to get things sorted with Body and Part(Container) placement. Since DeepSOIC has solutions for this in the part-o-magic workbench I would propose him as a mentor.

What about “Robust References”/“Topological Naming”? I would be open to mentoring for this, though I don’t know how good of a mentor I’d be (I’m mostly self-taught and have mostly dabbled in the code base)

That topic is most appreciated. Any small improvement on that side would be a big step forward for FreeCAD.

It is not specially difficult. You don’t need to know everything about FreeCAD, the community is there to help if needed. I would say the most important point is your willingness to help, and your availability during june → august. It is really important to have regular online meetings with the student, not necessarily every day but definitely more than once a week, plus some time to help him/her to get on tracks on the forum here and do a bit of “community work” (students are often pretty “shy” at the beginning)

In any case you’d be more than welcome! Amritpal, one of our last year’s students, also signaled he’d like to mentor this year.
